The role of metro in the long-term development of Yerevan city transport system must be rethought, given the obvious overcapacity of surface transportation and the dire shortage of parking space. This proposal considers opportunities for continued optimization of the existing metro network. In addition to the Ajapnyak station, which will extend the reach of the line across Yerevan gorge, our research strongly suggests creating a new metro train stop on the existing run between Sasuntsi David and Zoravar Andranik stations, in close proximity to the popular and well-attended Petak and Surmalu shopping centers.
The proposed station, while requiring only modest infrastructure investment, will significantly ease access to Petak and Surmalu shopping facilities for potential customers, as well as improve access to metro for nearby businesses and residents. The station will reduce traffic congestion and improve the appeal of the area for further gentrification, metropolitan development, and economic growth.
The proposed new station is a light three-level building, which connects pedestrian traffic flows from both sides of the Sevan Street. The simple rectangular shape of the structure is composed of a series of volumes of different size, shape, and position, interconnected by narrow bridges. Such arrangement symbolizes the subway system as a network of stations as different as their specific urban locality, with tunnels joining them into a whole system. The design of the station creates a unique visual experience for the passengers in the train, due to the unconventional usage of the station space causing a perception of overhanging structures. The volumes of the station are designed to serve various commercial and public purposes. Shared commercial use of the station space will have a profitability potential, which may attract long-term investment.
